Tramadol is a centrally acting analgesic that is commonly used to treat chronic pain. It is commonly prescribed for fibromyalgia, Restless Legs Syndrome, and other conditions, but has many properties that make it addictive. It is a member of the opiate family of drugs, which makes it a controlled substance. The drug is linked to physical as well as psychological dependence, both of which can be difficult to overcome. It is commonly believed that physical addiction happens in long-term users when its repeated use alters brain function.
